Simple Calving Management Tips
- Keep an eye on body condition of cow (aim for 3.25-3.5)
- Identify “at risk” cows and monitor accordingly
- Ensure a good precalving mineral has been used
- Good clean water supply
- Monitor hoof health, calving is sore enough!
- Ensure there is enough space available for calving & calves.
- Cow: 10m2 per cow for 10% of the herd. So, for 100 cows you should have 100m2 set aside.
- Calf: 1.7m2 per calf and 7m3 of air space. This could be for up to 65 calves in 100cow herd, so 111m2 and 455m3 of air space.
- Maximise hygiene in calving and calf pens – use a good bedding agent
- Ensure plenty of clean fresh air for calves
- Manage post calving feeding for the cow with good nutrition management
- And last but not least, identify and stock up on supplement supplies to have ready at hand.
